- Rocket Lab reached an agreement on Monday to acquire satellite services provider Iridium Communications for approximately $8 billion in cash and stock.
- “This acquisition fundamentally enhances our business model by combining our strong satellite subsystems, satellite platforms, and launch businesses with Iridium's proven cash-generating satellite services business,” Rocket Lab CFO Adam Spice said in a video presentation.
- The companies’ boards of directors have unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to be completed in mid-2027.

In conjunction with the agreement, Rocket Lab has secured $3.6 billion in bridge term loan facility financing from Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo Bank.
Additionally, the bridge facility will be available to refinance approximately $2.1 billion of Iridium’s debt, adjusted for the satellite service provider’s $366.7 million acquisition of Ariane, which is expected to close in July.
Rocket Lab’s acquisition of Iridium will be the manufacturer’s entrance into the space applications market, which the entity has “been talking about for a long time now,” CEO Peter Beck said during the company’s announcement.
Rocket Lab, which was established in 2006, has access to space through its own launch capabilities and the ability to build spacecraft at scale, Beck said.
However, Rocket Lab has encountered “really big barriers to building large successful constellations in orbit,” and needs space applications to obtain “all the value in space.”
“It takes a long time to build and launch your infrastructure, a long time to design and build your satellites, launch them, leave a longer time to get your first one dollar of revenue, and then finally it's a long time to a sustained cash flow model,” Beck said.
It would also take Rocket Lab a while to build its business model and customer base, delaying the time until the company has the “proper recurring cash flow,” he said.
Iridium will be Rocket Lab’s “shortcut,” Beck added, making the satellite manufacturer a “fully integrated self-launching space superpower, delivering critical communications capability to millions of users worldwide.”
Iridium’s spectrum network is “almost impossible to get,” the CEO added. Spectrum is the airwaves that enable communication anywhere, at any time, using the L-band, which ranges from 1 to 2 gigahertz. The L-band also makes communications resistant to various weather conditions.
“Iridium is critical to the people and the systems that just can’t lose signal: pilots, mariners, first responders, governments, critical infrastructure, and remote sensors operating at the ends of the earth,” Beck said. “Its ability to work through all weather and in gaps where other bands don’t reach makes it mission-critical for millions of people.”
Iridium will diversify Rocket Lab’s financial profile with recurring cash flow streams, according to the press release. Last year, Iridium generated revenue of $871.1 million, “providing substantial recurring cash flow to fund growth.”
The acquisition could also help level the playing field with rival SpaceX, which is in the process of completing its purchase of EchoStar’s AWS-4 and H-block spectrum licenses for approximately $17 billion. The deal will enable EchoStar’s Boost Mobile subscribers to access SpaceX’s Starlink direct-to-cell service, according to the September 2025 press release.
Amazon is also in the process of acquiring Globalstar, which will utilize spectrum to scale and reach of its low Earth orbit satellite network, Amazon Leo, which is set to launch in mid-2026.
Additionally, Amazon and Apple signed an agreement with Apple to provide satellite connectivity for the latter’s iPhone and Apple Watch products, according to the April 14 press release. Globalstar is currently providing satellite services to power iPhone 14s and later models, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
“If you want to do big things in space, you need spectrum,” Beck said. “As you can see, the others on this list have arrived at the same conclusion as us.”
