[COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.] — Intero Digital, a full-funnel digital marketing agency, has published a guide that looks at how generative AI tools evaluate B2B manufacturers before recommending them to industrial buyers. Written by Cosima Compton, director of SEO and GEO communications at Intero Digital, the guide covers the signals AI engines rely on to judge manufacturer credibility and the publishing practices that reduce a manufacturer’s visibility.
The guide responds to a change in how industrial buyers begin supplier research. According to Magenta Associates, 66% of B2B decision makers with buying power now use AI tools to research and evaluate potential suppliers, and 90% of those buyers trust the recommendations those tools provide. The data also shows that five brands capture 80% of top AI-generated responses in a given B2B category.
“Most manufacturers have spent years building websites for human buyers,” said Compton. “AI tools read that same information differently. They look for specifics they can verify and check them against everything else written about the company. The gap a buyer might never notice can be the thing that keeps a manufacturer off the list.”
The guide identifies four signals AI engines weigh when evaluating manufacturers:
Technical depth and specificity, including material specifications, tolerances, certifications, standards compliance, and structured product data.
Third-party validation from trade publications, industry awards, and independent reviews.
Consistent messaging across a company’s website, LinkedIn page, directory listings, and press coverage.
Named, credentialed authors attached to technical content.
The guide cites Semrush data showing that ChatGPT drives an estimated 87.4% of AI referral traffic across platforms, and capital equipment buyers commonly use it to generate an initial shortlist of three to four brands. ChatGPT’s recommendations skew toward brands that appear in authoritative trade publication “best of” lists (41%), industry awards and certifications cited online (18%), and visible rating and review profiles (16%).
The guide also identifies practices that work against manufacturers, including generic marketing copy, outdated technical specifications, mismatches between a company’s website and directory profiles such as ThomasNet, and a lack of published case studies. More than 70% of buyers avoid suppliers that lack transparent information, and 69% are deterred by negative reviews that AI systems surface, per Magenta Associates.
Two Intero Digital client engagements illustrate the issues the guide describes. Global Industrial, a distributor of industrial equipment and supplies, had no appearances in Google’s AI Overviews before beginning generative engine optimization work with Intero Digital that included homepage, CollectionPage, ProductCollection, and Article schema. Steel Storage Systems Inc., a manufacturer of industrial steel storage and material handling products, recorded a 26.6% increase in ranking keywords, a 267% increase in knowledge panel appearances, and a 483% increase in local 3-pack appearances after Intero Digital addressed technical and on-page issues on its site, according to Intero Digital.
“AI tools are going to play a larger role in supplier research every year,” said Compton. “Manufacturers that treat their public information as something to maintain, the same way they maintain their equipment, will be in a much stronger position as that happens.”
Written for marketing and communications teams at B2B manufacturers and industrial suppliers, the full guide is available on the Intero Digital website.
